Tour of the Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory (RMTL) at Queen's University
The Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory (RMTL) on Queen’s North Campus is the main research facility of the MAX-Nuclear Institute. We make use of accelerated ions to rapidly generate irradiation damage or transmutation products that emulates what is happening inside a reactor. Coupled with in situ capabilities we can study the details of mechanisms behind irradiation induced degradation in reactor relevant materials. The tour will showcase the accelerator, electron microscopes and other facilities of the RMTL.

MAX-Nuclear Research Institute. The recently formed MAX-Nuclear Research Institute seeks to be Canada’s premier university hub for nuclear materials research, and we are on a mission to help put Canada at the forefront of global clean energy innovation. We will unite experts by bringing together universities, government agencies, operators, and international networks to foster deep, hands-on collaboration. We conduct cutting-edge materials research that helps secure the safety, reliability, and long-term integrity of Canada's existing nuclear reactors while pioneering the scientific breakthroughs needed to design and deploy next-generation nuclear systems, including fusion. Ultimately, we are accelerating the transition to a net-zero future by helping make safe, sustainable nuclear energy a reality for generations to come. Please consider joining us for our inaugural annual workshop which will include speakers, and a student poster session. The workshop is being held 1st October, the day after MCFD, on the beautiful Queen’s campus. Registration is free but required: Launch - October 1, 2026
