As vice president for science and technology for Canadian Nuclear Laboratories with more than 35 years of experience, Dr. Monica Regalbuto oversees a research program that pursues new opportunities and investments, including nuclear innovation efforts contributing to better health outcomes through advancements in nuclear medicine and building a more sustainable energy system to contribute to Canada’s climate goals. Most recently, Monica led the development of the U.S. nuclear fuel cycle strategy at the Idaho National Laboratory to ensure adequate supplies for fuel for deployment of advanced reactors. Monica was previously nominated and confirmed as the assistant secretary for the Office of Environmental Management (EM) for the U.S. Department of Energy, where she was responsible for managing environmental cleanup across 16 sites in 11 states. Preceding her nomination, Monica served as EM’s associate principal deputy assistant secretary, responsible for directing in-depth analysis in critical technical, scientific, business and policy management issues. She has also held senior technical and leadership roles across a number of U.S. federal organizations, including Argonne National Laboratory. She represented U.S. interests at the Fukushima cleanup in Japan, the Republic of Korea Joint Fuel Cycle Study, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management. Monica recently served as a member of the Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Energy at the IAEA. She currently serves as a member of the Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board at the National Academy of Sciences and the American Nuclear Society. Monica earned a bachelor’s degree from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, as well as a master’s degree and a doctoral degree from the University of Notre Dame, all in chemical engineering.
