Course Description

This is an introductory to intermediate level course that highlights the synergy between plant chemistry and material corrosion and degradation. The focus is on CANDU systems, where the objectives of chemistry control, chemistry best practices, corrosion issues and outcomes, and corrosion monitoring and mitigation strategies are covered.

Course Outcome

By the end this course, the participant shall gain:

  • Introduction to relevant chemistry basics
  • Introduction to chemistry specifications for several major CANDU systems
  • Knowledge of the mechanisms of some of the main forms of corrosion that affect the systems discussed
  • Understanding of past and present corrosion monitoring and mitigation strategies
  • Appreciation for the relationship between the chemistry, design, and materials of construction in CANDU systems

How to get there?

Driving
Directions from Ottawa (ETA 2-2.5 hrs):

1- Take Queensway WEST or follow the signs indicating Kanata/Arnprior/Pembroke.

2- Queensway WEST becomes Highway 17 WEST.  Pass Arnprior, Renfrew, Pembroke, and you will arrive Petawawa).

Directions from Toronto (ETA 4.5-5 hrs):

1- Take ON-407 EON-115 NON-28 N and ON-62 N to Old Barrys Bay Rd in Combermere

2- Follow Old Barrys Bay RdHopefield Rd and Renfrew County Rd 66 to ON-60 E in Wilno

3- Turn onto ON-60 E

4- Take Round Lake Rd/Renfrew County Rd 58 and Doran Rd/County Rd 26 to Portage Rd in Petawawa.

 

Flight & Bus

You may also fly to Ottawa, and take a bus from BusBud service. Please make sure you arrive in Ottawa in time, as the bus departure to Petawawa are usually in the morning. Additionally, please ensure you have booked your bus trip in advance.

The BusBud pickup location in Ottawa usually is one of ViaRail Station, Ottawa Hospital, or CHEO. You may get there from the Airport by Uber.
